Bhakti Kalani (43), sister-in-law of former member of legislative council from Ulhasnagar, Pappu Kalani, has filed a petition in the high court seeking protection from her "politically connected" husband, who has been "harassing" her for dowry for the last few years.
According to the petition filed last Friday, on March 29, her husband, Pradeep Kalani, tried set her ablaze in her bedroom by igniting the curtains with a cigarette lighter. She approached the Powaii Police in this connection, but they registered only a non-cognisable complaint. Then on April 9, Powaii Police called her and Pradeep to record their statements.
However, after they returned home, Pradeep threatened her saying she would be killed. He also said his brother, Pappu Kalani, had a lot of clout and was known to do such acts, her petition has alleged.
Bhakti has alleged that after her marriage to Pradeep in 1998, both of them started residing at 'Florentine' in Hiranandani Garden's, Powaii. Pradeep soon started demanding dowry. But she was unable to pay and was hence subjected to physical, mental and sexual abuses. She has also said her son from her earlier marriage was also being threatened by Pradeep and his three children.
Advocate Kaushik Mhatre, representing Bhakti Kalani, said: "She seeks police protection due to imminent threat to her life. Hence I and my colleague, Purvi Shah, has moved writ petition in the high court seeking necessary direction."
Senior police inspector at Powaii station Yadavrao Jadhav said: "I was on leave at that time. I will look into the matter and take required action."
