*The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government on Thursday announced a Safety for Women on Public Road Transport scheme to ensure security in buses or any other public transport.*

The scheme will be launched this year on a pilot basis. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced a sum of Rs 50 crore in the current financial year for the scheme.

For another scheme, the minister announced allocation of Rs 150 crore to ensure the safety of women in large cities.

He also proposed to set up Crisis Management Centres in all the districts of national capital territory (NCT) of Delhi this year in all government and private hospitals. The funding will be provided from the Nirbhaya Fund, Jaitley added.

The Finance Minister announced a new scheme under the title "Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao" to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of delivery of welfare services meant for women. He announced an initial corpus of Rs 100 crore for the scheme.

Jaitley said that the NDA government at the Centre would focus on campaigns to sensitise people towards the concerns of the girl child and women.

He also said that the process of sensitisation must begin early and therefore the school curriculum must have a separate chapter on gender mainstreaming.

Asserting that the NDA government attaches utmost importance to the welfare
of the girl child, the Finance Minister announced introduction of a special small savings instrument to cater to the requirements of educating and marriage of the girl child.

Drop in allocation

The "Gender Budget" shows only a marginal increase of Rs 896 crore in spending on womens programmes in comparison to the previous budget. In total, provisions of Rs 98,030 crore have been made this time as against Rs 97,134 crore last year.

This could adversely affect important programmes, like the mid-day meal scheme for women. Allocation for this programme has come down as compared to last year.

The Budget statements show a drop for 100 per-cent women-specific schemes from Rs 27,248 crore in 2013-14 to 21,888 crore. This is due to the shifting of some of the schemes from the 100 per cent category to the 30 per cent category by ministries. Reported by Deccan Herald 3 hours ago.
