*A 19-year-old boy was murdered by his sister's boyfriend for opposing to their relationship in Rani Bagh on Tuesday. The victim who was sleeping when attacked fought back the assailant, but was killed in the scuffle. The couple was arrested on Wednesday.*
Varun Chauhan, 27, and Navpreet Kaur, 22, were in a relationship for the last seven years. Navpreet's family knew about it and was against their marriage.
Her brother Tejyash was proving to be the main obstacle.
"Each time Navpreet's parents would soften their stand, Tejyash would prove to be the hindrance. The couple thought that if they could get rid of Tejyash, Navpreet's parents would weaken and would pave the way for their marriage," a police officer told Deccan Herald.
Navpreet and Chauhan planned it out well. They chose a time when Tejyash's parents would be away from home and the victim would be asleep, thus offering least resistance.
Tejyash slept till late in the morning and rarely woke up before 10 am.
"Tejyash's mother generally slept in a different building, close to their home and his father, who deals in maintenance of machines, leaves home early for work," the officer said.
Around 9 am on Tuesday, Navpreet let in Chauhan to their flat on the first floor of the building. He had come armed with a knife.
"Navpreet probably did not want to witness the murder of her brother and left for her office after letting Chauhan in," said the officer. Navpreet worked for a private company.
Chauhan then attacked a sleeping Tejyash who woke up with the first knife injury on his body.
The victim fought back but Chauhan continued inflicting stab wounds one after the other.
"A scuffle ensued between the two during which Tejyash almost managed to overpower the attacker and left him injured. But the victim had lost a lot of blood in the scuffle and was tired," the officer said. Chauhan then slit his throat.
The fightback from Tejyash had left Chauhan panicked and he fled from the house without making sure that the victim was dead.
Tejyash's mother came home about an hour later and found her son with several stab wounds and a slit throat.
Police were informed and Tejyash rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Police were left clueless during initial investigations. But they later learnt about Navpreet's relationship with Chauhan and Tejyash's objection to it.
Chauhan was found absconding but soon nabbed following a tip-off.
During interrogation, he confessed to have killed Tejyash. The couple was subsequently arrested. Reported by Deccan Herald 4 hours ago.
