* More dirt seems to be tumbling out of the cupboard of Ranjit Kumar Kohli, alias Raqibul Hasan Khan, who has been charged by his estranged wife and national shooter Tara Shahdeo with torture and forceful conversion to Islam after their wedding.

As the Jharkhand police continue to interrogate Raqibul alias Ranjit, another interesting revelation has come to light.

Kohli's father Harman Kohli used to reside in Patna 35 years back when he was working as a Sales Tax Officer in Bihar's Commercial Tax Department.

The senior Kohli, while staying in Patna's Mithapur locality, had hired a maid Kaushaliya (mother of Ranjit), for domestic work. But soon after the death of Harman's wife, the officer became close to his maid and left for Ranchi lock, stock and Kaushaliya.

Ranchi was then part of Bihar and Harman stayed with Kaushaliya at Bariyatu (near Rajendra Medical College and Hospital, now called RIMS). Soon he wedded his maid, following which Ranjit Kohli was born. Prior to this relationship, Kaushaliya already had a daughter Kiran from her previous marriage.

The senior Kohli adopted Kiran as step-daughter and all four stayed happily at Bariyatu till tragedy struck the Kohlis. The flat in which they stayed was gutted in a fire. Harman Kohli too succumbed to his burn injuries.

Following this tragedy, the financial condition of the family became so bad that Kaushaliya had to take up the job of maid once again even in Ranchi. Her teenage daughter Kiran too worked as a maid till she got the job of a sweeper at a private hospital.

Sources in Ranchi, who were Kohlis' neighbours, told a local vernacular daily that things changed dramatically when Harman's son Ranjit grew up. Within years, their fortune changed and it was a rags-to-riches story.

Ranjit, who is now cooling his heels in jail in Jharkhand for fraud, is facing charges of running a hawala racket and terror links too, although the Ranchi police have so far not found any substantial evidence against him in both cases.

His estranged wife Tara, who alleged that Ranjit was actually a Muslim and had forced her to change to Islam soon after their marriage, also alleged that the 'conman' had close links with Jharkhand politicians, judges and bureaucrats.

The BJP, which has termed the episode as 'love jihad', has been extending emotional as well as financial support to Tara. Reported by Deccan Herald 1 day ago.
