According to reports, Reena, a Dalit, had married Pramod Gupta, who belonged to a different caste about four years ago after a brief love affair. Both were residents of Uttar Pradesh's Ballia distict.
Pramod's family was not at all happy with the marriage as Reena was a Dalit and the marriage had brought a bad name to them. Pramod had been living separately with her. Seething with anger, his family members were looking for an opportunity to punish the girl whom they considered the real culprit.
On Thursday Pramod's brothers — Dharmendra and Gudha — forcibly took Reena and her daughter to the banks of the Ghaghra river at Turtipar in the district and threw them both into the river. They escaped after committing the crime, sources said.
Reena was saved by the locals, who saw them being thrown into the river and rushed to the spot. The little girl, however, could not be traced and was presumed dead, sources said.A case has been lodged with Ubhaon police station and an investigation is on.
Earlier also, many lovers had faced the wrath of the panchayats or their families in the state. Incidents of honour killings are quite common in the state, especially in the western region.
