A year of democratic change and 'princely' loss

*The year 2013 is a mixed bag for Mysoreans for many reasons. In the decades to follow, the year will be most talked about for the death of royal scion SrikantadattaNarasimharaja Wadiyar. Also, it was the same year that Siddaramaiah, a Mysorean catapulted to the seat of Chief Minister of the State.*

Srikantadatta NarasimharajaWadiyar died of cardiac arrest on December 10 in Bangalore Palace.

Though he didn't have any remarkable contributions to claim like his ancestors, he was still a revered Maharaja for the people of Mysore for whom royalty was deeply ingrained in the midst of all encompassing democratic system. More so,Wadiyar kept the tradition set by Raja Wadiyar in the form of Naada Habba Dasara alive (1610 AD) even after five centuries, by decorating the gold studded throne during his private durbar every year on Navaratri, an occasion during which people irrespective of religion were witness to the bygone royal days.

For most, especially the senior citizens who had a reason to boast of the account of the erstwhile ruler Jayachamaraja Wadiyar (the 25th and last Maharaja of Mysore and father of Srikantadatta), Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar was indeed the epitome of royalty for the later and younger generation.

Similarly, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has had a long and bitter battle to make it to the hot seat.

An advocate who plunged into politics at the fag end of 20th century, Siddaramaiah had to endure many paths to hold the reins of the State government. A native of Siddaramanahundi from Mysore taluk, Siddaramaiah is the son of a farmer, who had a plebian upbringing that finally brought him to the city of Mysore for higher education.Politically, it was a year of surprises too when Janata Dal (Secular) and BJPjoined hands to keep Congress out of power in Mysore City Corporation (MCC).

ThoughCongress and JD(S) had ruled the civic body in alliance during the previous council (2008-13), nothing worked in favour of them to continue with the marriage. This despiteCongress winning 22of the total 65 seats followed by 20 ofJD(S) and 12 of BJP.It was avenged with the meticulous planning ofCongress that reclaimed power in ZP (defeatingBJP and JD(S) combine) and also in Taluk Panchayat.
