A 31-year-old woman doctor of All India Institute of Medical Sciences allegedly committed suicide due to "immense" mental torture caused by the sexual orientation of her husband, a dermatologist in the same hospital, according to a PTI report.

A detailed suicide note found on the spot and a similar Facebook post written on Saturday afternoon revealed that her husband's sexual orientation led to sour relationship between the doctor couple.

The couple got married five years ago and were staying in AIIMS quarters in south Delhi. Soon after the marriage, the woman doctor came to know that her husband was a "gay". However, in the suicide note she claimed that she had "accepted it" and was ready to live with it but subsequent torture by her husband led her to take the extreme step.

*Here is what equal rights activist, Harrish Iyer, had to say about the incident-*

I received half a dozen calls asking me for my view on the suicide of the female doctor because she discovered the sexuality of her gay husband. Here are my views.

- The man needs to be arrested if he harassed his wife. He should be arrested for cheating on his wife and causing trauma, irrespective of the gender of the person he had sex with behind her back.

- If he traumatised her physically, he should have the appropriate sections of the law applied to him.

- Being gay is not a character certificate. Just like straight people, gay people can be angels and superheroes, and they can be nasty and scoundrels too. This one seems to belong to the latter.

- While showing no sympathy to the guy is a done deal, if the law was a human being, section 377 would be arrested too. Section 377 pushes people deep into the closets of shame. It breeds contempt. Section 377 adds stigma to a community that is already battling with stigmatised society.

- Till we build a nation where individuals can be who they are without fear of dire consequences or shame, the lives of women will be put at stake. This is one of the reasons why Section 377 has to go, i.e. for the sake of women's rights.

Don't you think we should be a country that boasts of equal rights for everybody?
