* District and Sessions Court Judge B M Angadi lamented that even after six decades of India receiving independence and despite the introduction of several laws to protect women, the country has still not become a safe place for women to live.*
Speaking after inaugurating the one-day awareness workshop on 'laws for women protection,' the magistrate said that it is a huge lapse on the part of the nation that even after advancement in many sectors, the country is still witnessing an increased number of atrocities against women. Women are made to struggle in every phase of their life to get their rights. It is indeed high time to look into the issues that are causing obstacle to the safety of women, he added.
Stating that the lack of awareness on existing laws to protect women is the major barrier in women fighting against unfavourable incidents, the magistrate called for creating an awareness programme to be taken up in every nook and corner of the society. He stressed that awareness programmes should be taken up at village level. There are laws to protect women against dowry harassment. However, the women are harassed to maximum extent for dowry and many times women lose their lives.
The magistrate said that girl should be accepted as an asset to the family and not as a burden. He said even a toddler is not spared and she too is the victim of sexual harassment by sick minds. Legal awareness programme is on the wheels visiting every district once in four months to create awareness among public. He lauded Udupi district for its literate status in terms of child marriage cases. There are less number of child marriage cases reported in Udupi district, he said.
DC Dr M T Reju stressed for creating awareness programmes on women protection laws. People with the knowledge of laws should come forward to make use of it and simultaneously spread their knowledge among others. Reported by Deccan Herald 2 days ago.
